What does he/she have that I haven't got? What kind of question is this, anyway?

I have seen this question asked so many times in movies. Then I heard it in real life. If some one is going to leave you, what are you going to do? Go out and get the substance or thing that he/she has that you haven't got, as if it was a commodity?
